Abstract
The present study aimed to determine the effects of participation in meaningful community-based activities on the functional level of patients with early onset dementia (EOD) attending the Center for Dementia in terms of cognitive function, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and social function. Four patients with EOD, who visited the Center for Dementia in S city (Seoul, Korea) between July and October 2022, were enrolled in the program.
The interventions were performed once per week for 12 weeks. The program included group activities related to the activities of daily living, leisure, and work that were meaningful to patients with EOD. Cognitive function and subjective memory of the subjects mostly changed or remained positive after the program compared with pre-program implementation; moreover, positive changes were also noted in IADL and depressive mood. Because EOD progresses rapidly, active intervention in the early stage(s) is necessary to delay symptoms and functional decline. Therefore, in addition to interventions that delay the onset of symptoms in patients with EOD living in the community, research investigating methods to maintain role-related functions and continuous social participation, and education and support systems for professionals, should be expanded.
